How to Rank in ChatGPT: A Guide for Ecommerce Brands

ChatGPT doesn't have a single ranking you can buy or game. Here's how ecommerce brands get cited and recommended in ChatGPT search, step by step.

To rank in ChatGPT, your store needs to be reachable by OpenAI's search crawler, easy for ChatGPT to understand, and mentioned on the sites ChatGPT draws on when it answers shopping questions. There's no paid placement or single trick for organic answers. The brands that show up most consistently have clear product information, strong regular SEO and a good reputation across the web.

This guide covers how ChatGPT finds and cites sources, and the practical steps an online store can take to get cited and recommended.

How does ChatGPT decide what to show?

When ChatGPT searches the web, it runs searches, reads the pages it finds, and writes an answer with links to its sources. If it doesn't search, it answers from what the model learned in training, which can be out of date.

That gives you two ways to appear:

  • Through search: ChatGPT finds and cites your pages when it searches the web for a question. You can influence this now, through SEO and crawler access.
  • Through training knowledge: the model already knows your brand because it was widely discussed on the web. This builds slowly through reputation and mentions.

ChatGPT also shows product results for many shopping questions, with images, prices and links to buy. OpenAI has also introduced ways for merchants to share product data with ChatGPT. Check OpenAI's merchant documentation for current eligibility and requirements.

Is "ranking in ChatGPT" the same as ranking in Google?

Not exactly, but they're closely related. ChatGPT search relies on web search results to find sources, so pages that rank well in regular search are more likely to be found and cited.

The differences are in how answers are built. ChatGPT reads several sources and writes one answer, so it favors pages with clear, quotable facts and direct answers. It also weighs what other sites say about you, such as reviews, comparisons and forum discussions, more visibly than a list of links does. If you want the broader picture, see our guide on AEO vs SEO.

Step 1: Let OpenAI's search crawler in

ChatGPT can only cite pages its crawler can reach. OpenAI uses a crawler called OAI-SearchBot to find pages for ChatGPT search, and OpenAI says sites that block it won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers.

Check your robots.txt file (yourstore.com/robots.txt) for any rules that block OAI-SearchBot. Keep in mind:

  • GPTBot is OpenAI's separate training crawler. Blocking GPTBot doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search, so you can decide on it separately.
  • ChatGPT-User visits pages when a user asks ChatGPT to open a link. OpenAI says robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot are what control search inclusion.
  • Changes to robots.txt can take about a day to take effect.

Some security tools and firewalls block bots by default, so also check your CDN or hosting settings if you use one.

Step 2: Make your key content readable without JavaScript

Make sure your product names, prices, descriptions, reviews and FAQs are in the page's HTML, not loaded only by scripts. Many crawlers don't run JavaScript the way a browser does, so content that only appears after scripts load may be missed.

A quick check: open a product page, right-click and choose "View page source". If you can't find the product description or reviews in that source code, crawlers may not see them either. Our technical SEO checklist includes this and other rendering checks.

Strong regular SEO is one of the most reliable ways to get cited in ChatGPT, because ChatGPT search starts from web search results. If your collection pages and buying guides don't rank anywhere, ChatGPT is less likely to find them.

For stores, that means:

  • Optimized collection pages for your main product categories.
  • Unique, detailed product pages.
  • Buying guides and comparisons for your category's common questions.
  • No technical problems stopping your pages from being indexed.

It's also worth making sure your site is verified in Bing Webmaster Tools with your sitemap submitted, since Bing's index is used by several search and AI products. Our ecommerce SEO strategy covers the full plan.

Step 4: Write pages ChatGPT can quote

ChatGPT builds answers from short, clear passages, so structure your pages to provide them. The easier a fact is to pull out, the easier it is to cite.

  • Answer first. Start each page and section with a one or two sentence answer, then explain.
  • Use question headings. Match the questions shoppers ask, like "Are linen sheets good for hot sleepers?".
  • State facts in text. Materials, sizes, compatibility, warranty, shipping times and return policy should be readable text.
  • Be specific. "Fits desks up to 30 inches deep" is more useful than "fits most desks".
  • Add FAQs. Answer real customer questions on product and collection pages.
  • Keep it current. Update prices, availability and "best of" content when things change.

Step 5: Get mentioned where ChatGPT looks

ChatGPT often cites third-party pages when people ask for recommendations, such as review sites, comparison articles, "best of" lists and community discussions. Being mentioned accurately in those places makes your brand more likely to appear.

Practical ways to build those mentions:

  • Get your products reviewed by relevant publications and creators.
  • Ask for inclusion in honest "best of" roundups in your niche.
  • Encourage customers to leave reviews on trusted review platforms.
  • Take part in community discussions where your customers ask questions, and be helpful rather than promotional.
  • Keep your business name, description and details consistent everywhere they appear.

This is the slowest step, but it also strengthens your brand in the model's training knowledge over time.

Step 6: Get your products into ChatGPT's shopping results

ChatGPT can show product results with images, prices and links when people ask shopping questions. Product data quality matters here: clear titles, accurate prices, availability, images and reviews.

Steps that help:

  • Keep your Product schema accurate, with price, availability, brand and reviews.
  • Keep your Google Merchant Center feed clean, since good feed data tends to help across shopping surfaces.
  • Check whether you can submit a product feed to OpenAI directly. OpenAI has been opening merchant programs to more platforms, so check its current merchant documentation for what your platform supports.

Step 7: Track whether it's working

Measure ChatGPT visibility by checking answers directly and by watching referral traffic. There's no ChatGPT equivalent of Search Console yet.

  • Ask ChatGPT your customers' questions every month, such as "best waterproof hiking boots for wide feet", and note whether your brand or pages appear.
  • Check analytics for referrals from chatgpt.com. Many ChatGPT links include a utm_source=chatgpt.com parameter.
  • Watch branded search in Search Console. Growing brand searches can be a sign that AI recommendations are working.
  • Consider an AI visibility tool if you want to track many questions at once.

What doesn't work

Some tactics promise fast results but don't hold up:

  • Keyword stuffing for AI. Writing for machines instead of shoppers makes pages less useful to both.
  • Fake reviews or self-written "best of" lists. These damage trust and can break platform rules.
  • Hidden text aimed at AI. Content shoppers can't see is a risky tactic and isn't a reliable way to get cited.
  • Relying on llms.txt alone. It may help some tools, but it doesn't replace crawlable pages and good content.

FAQ

Let OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot crawl your site, rank well in regular search, structure pages with direct answers and clear facts, and get mentioned on trusted review and comparison sites. There's no paid way to rank in ChatGPT's organic answers.

ChatGPT cites pages it finds when searching the web. Make your pages crawlable, answer questions directly near the top of each page, state facts clearly in text, and keep information up to date. Pages that already rank in regular search are more likely to be cited.

No. GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler. OAI-SearchBot is the crawler used for ChatGPT search. Blocking GPTBot stops your content being used for training but doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search results.

Organic answers and citations in ChatGPT can't be bought. OpenAI's advertising and merchant programs are separate from organic answers, so check OpenAI's current documentation for what's available to your store.

Crawler access changes take about a day. Being cited for competitive shopping questions usually takes months, because it depends on your regular rankings and how often other sites mention your brand.
