Free Technical SEO Checklist for Ecommerce

A technical SEO checklist is a list of checks that confirm search engines can find, crawl, render and index the pages on your site. This checklist is built for online stores. It covers the problems we see most often on Shopify, WooCommerce and custom stores: faceted navigation, duplicate product URLs, out-of-stock products and missing product schema. It also covers the checks that now affect whether AI search tools can read and cite your pages.

Each item has a one-line check and a short note on how to test it. You can use it as a technical SEO audit template, work through it yourself, or hand it to your developer.

How to use this checklist

Work through the sections in order, because crawling and indexing problems hide everything below them. Mark each item as pass, fail or not applicable, and note the URLs affected.

  • Tools you'll need: Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, a crawler (Screaming Frog, Sitebulb or similar), PageSpeed Insights and Google's Rich Results Test.
  • Start with your most important templates: homepage, top collection or category pages, top product pages and your blog. Most technical issues repeat across every page that uses the same template.
  • Fix in order of impact: anything that blocks indexing first, then duplicates, then speed and schema.

1. Crawling and indexing

10 items

Search engines can only rank pages they can crawl and choose to index. Start here.

3. URLs, duplicates and canonicals

7 items

Online stores create duplicate URLs easily. Canonical tags and consistent URLs tell search engines which version to rank.

4. Ecommerce-specific checks

8 items

These problems are specific to stores and are often where the biggest technical wins are.

5. Page speed and Core Web Vitals

6 items

Speed affects both rankings and conversions, and slow product pages hurt both.

6. Mobile

4 items

Google uses the mobile version of your pages for indexing, so the mobile page is the one that counts.

7. Structured data

7 items

Structured data helps search engines and AI tools understand your products, prices and business.

8. International and hreflang

3 items

If you sell in more than one country or language, search engines need to know which page to show where.

9. JavaScript rendering

4 items

If your store relies on JavaScript, make sure important content still reaches search engines and AI crawlers.

10. AI search readiness

6 items

AI search tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews need to reach your pages and understand them before they can cite you.

11. Monitoring

5 items

Technical SEO isn't a one-time job. Set up monitoring so new problems get caught early.

Yes. Every check applies to Shopify, and some items, like product URLs inside collections and app scripts, are written with Shopify stores in mind. A few fixes depend on your theme or apps, so you may need a developer for those.

Yes. AI search tools can only cite pages their crawlers can reach and read. Blocking AI search crawlers, hiding content behind JavaScript or leaving out clear product facts makes it harder for tools like ChatGPT and Perplexity to use your pages.
