AEO vs SEO: What Changes for Online Stores

AEO and SEO aren't rivals. Here's how answer engine optimization differs from traditional SEO, where GEO fits in, and what it changes for online stores.

SEO (search engine optimization) helps your pages rank in search results so people click through to your site. AEO (answer engine optimization) helps your content get chosen as the answer itself, in tools like Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity and voice assistants. For online stores, AEO doesn't replace SEO. It builds on it, and most of the work overlaps.

This guide explains the difference, where GEO (generative engine optimization) fits in, and what to change on your store.

What is SEO?

SEO is the practice of improving your website so search engines rank it higher for relevant searches. The outcome is a click: a shopper sees your collection or product page in the results and visits your store.

For an ecommerce store, SEO usually covers:

  • Technical SEO: making sure search engines can crawl and index your pages.
  • On-page SEO: matching collection and product pages to what people search for.
  • Content: buying guides, comparisons and how-tos that answer questions.
  • Authority: links and mentions from other trusted websites.

If you want the full plan, our ecommerce SEO strategy guide walks through it step by step.

What is AEO?

AEO is the practice of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can pull a clear answer from it and show or cite that answer directly. The outcome may be a citation, a mention or a product recommendation rather than a click.

AEO grew out of featured snippets and voice search. It matters more now because AI tools answer full questions in one response. A shopper can ask "what's the best standing desk for a small apartment?" and get a short list without ever seeing ten blue links.

AEO focuses on:

  • Direct answers: the answer to a question in the first sentence or two.
  • Question-based structure: headings that match the questions people actually ask.
  • Clear facts: product details, specs and policies stated plainly in text.
  • Structured data: schema markup that labels products, reviews, FAQs and your business.
  • Trust signals: consistent business information and mentions on other reputable sites.

What is GEO, and how does it relate to AEO?

GEO (generative engine optimization) is the practice of getting your brand and content included in answers generated by AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews. In practice, AEO and GEO overlap heavily, and many people use the terms interchangeably.

The difference is mostly emphasis. AEO started with any "answer" format, including featured snippets and voice assistants. GEO refers specifically to generative AI, where a model writes a new answer from several sources. You'll also see the same idea called AI SEO, LLM optimization or AI search optimization. For a store, the practical work is the same.

AEO vs SEO: the key differences

The main difference is the outcome. SEO aims for a ranked link and a click. AEO aims to be the source an answer is built from.

The goal

  • SEO: rank a page high in search results and win the click.
  • AEO: be quoted, cited or recommended inside the answer.

The unit of content

  • SEO: the whole page, optimized around a main keyword.
  • AEO: individual passages, such as a definition, a step or a product fact, that can be pulled out and used on their own.

How queries look

  • SEO: often short searches, like "linen sheets".
  • AEO: often longer, conversational questions, like "are linen sheets good for hot sleepers, and how do I wash them?".

How success is measured

  • SEO: rankings, organic clicks and organic revenue.
  • AEO: citations and mentions in AI answers, branded searches, and referral traffic from AI tools. These are harder to measure, and the tools for tracking them are still developing.

What they share

Both depend on the same foundation: crawlable pages, helpful content, clear structure and a trusted brand. Google says its AI features draw on the same core systems as regular Search, and that standard SEO best practices still apply to them. A store with weak SEO rarely has strong AEO.

What AEO changes for online stores

For stores, AEO changes how you write and structure pages more than what pages you build. Collection, product and content pages still do the work. They just need to be easier for machines to quote.

1. Lead with the answer

Put the direct answer at the top of each page and each section. On a buying guide, open with your recommendation, then explain it. On a collection page, a two-sentence introduction should say what the collection is and who it's for.

2. Write product facts in plain text

AI tools can only use facts they can read. State materials, dimensions, compatibility, care instructions, warranty and shipping details as text on the page, not only in images or PDFs.

3. Turn customer questions into content

Your support inbox, reviews and site search show the questions shoppers really ask. Answer them in product FAQs, collection page content and buying guides, using the same wording customers use.

4. Use structured data properly

Product, Offer, Review, BreadcrumbList, FAQPage and Organization schema help search engines and AI tools understand your pages. Keep the data accurate and matched to what shoppers can see. Our technical SEO checklist includes the schema checks we run.

5. Let AI search crawlers in

If robots.txt blocks AI search crawlers, those tools can't read your pages. Check whether your store blocks crawlers like OAI-SearchBot (used for ChatGPT search) or PerplexityBot. Training crawlers like GPTBot are a separate decision.

6. Build mentions beyond your own site

AI answers often draw on reviews, comparison articles, forums and press coverage. Being mentioned in those places, accurately and consistently, helps AI tools recognize your brand when shoppers ask for recommendations.

An example: the same page, optimized for SEO and AEO

Here's how one page changes when you add AEO to SEO. Imagine a hypothetical bedding store with a collection page for linen sheets.

Optimized for SEO only, the page has:

  • A title and H1 of "Linen Sheets".
  • A grid of products.
  • A few hundred words below the grid, written around the keyword "linen sheets".

Optimized for SEO and AEO, the page also has:

  • A two-sentence introduction that says what makes the store's linen sheets different and who they suit, for example hot sleepers.
  • Clear facts in text: fabric weight, where the linen is made, sizes, care instructions and the return window.
  • An FAQ answering questions customers really ask, such as "Do linen sheets get softer?" and "Are linen sheets good for hot sleepers?", each with a direct first-sentence answer.
  • Product, Review, BreadcrumbList and FAQPage schema that match what's on the page.
  • Links to a buying guide comparing linen and cotton.

The second version still targets "linen sheets" in search results. It also gives an AI tool short, specific passages it can quote when a shopper asks which sheets to buy.

Should you choose AEO or SEO?

You don't need to choose. Treat AEO as a layer on top of SEO, not a replacement for it. Most of the AEO work above also improves your regular rankings and conversion rate.

A sensible order for most stores:

  1. Fix technical SEO so pages can be crawled and indexed.
  2. Optimize your most important collection and product pages.
  3. Restructure key pages so answers come first and facts are clear.
  4. Build helpful content around your customers' questions.
  5. Earn mentions on trusted sites, and track how AI tools describe your brand.

FAQ

SEO helps pages rank in search results so people click through to your site. AEO helps your content get selected as the answer itself in AI tools, featured snippets and voice assistants. SEO aims for clicks; AEO aims for citations and recommendations.

No. AI answer tools still rely on pages they can crawl, understand and trust, which is what SEO builds. AEO adds a focus on clear answers, structured facts and brand mentions on top of that foundation.

They overlap heavily. GEO (generative engine optimization) refers specifically to getting included in answers written by generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI Overviews. AEO is a slightly broader term that also covers featured snippets and voice search.

Yes. Shoppers ask AI tools for product recommendations, comparisons and buying advice. Stores that state product facts clearly, answer common questions and are mentioned on trusted sites are easier for those tools to recommend.

Track referral traffic from AI tools in your analytics, watch branded search trends in Search Console, and regularly ask AI tools the questions your customers ask to see whether your brand appears. Dedicated AI visibility tools can automate some of this.
